Home Safety Inspection
Program
The Stratford Professional Firefighters Burn Foundation and the Stratford Fire Department, partnering with the Stratford Fire Marshal Office and Stratford Firefighters; IAFF Local 998, have embarked on an ambitious Home Safety Inspection Program. This program is being funded with a grant from F.E.M.A.
We began this program, as a direct result of an increase in the number of fire fatalities and scald related injuries, which have occurred to our residents in 2008-09.
In 2009, the Stratford Professional Firefighters Burn Foundation, embarked on a three phase scald program. Phase one consisted of 18,000 scald prevention cards being mailed to homeowners in our town. Partnering with our fire department with this Home Inspection Survey program allows us to begin phase two of this scald program.
It is our goal to reduce these incidents.
Why are we conducting the program?
Since 2008, the Town of Stratford has seen a significant increase in the number of fire fatalities due to missing or inoperable smoke detectors, and burn injuries related to high water temperature.
How will we be conducting the program?
Stratford Firefighters after responding to an emergency or non emergency call may ask to conduct this Home Safety Inspection. If you wish to schedule an appointment for us to visit your home to conduct this survey, please call: (203) 381-2081
Smoke Detectors:
Stratford Firefighters will be asking your permission to inspect your home, to ensure that smoke detectors are present in every level of your residence. We will also test your detectors to determine that they are working properly. When needed we will replace batteries in your detectors at no cost to you.
In instances when we find that a residence is without a smoke detector, we will install one, also at no cost to you.
Anti-Scald Program:
During our home inspection, we will ask to test the hot water at your kitchen sink. Any water temperature exceeding 120 degrees, we will recommend that the thermostat on your hot water tank or on demand system be turned down below this temperature.
Anti-scald devices, which stop the flow of hot water exceeding 120 degrees will be available to our elderly, disabled and those with special needs at no cost to the resident*
Serious burns can occur with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees, especially to our young and elderly. Turning your temperatures down, will reduce energy costs.
Remember to turn the handles on your pots around on your stoves, so they cannot be pulled over!
* until supply lasts
"Turn it down, turn them around"
Address Marker Campaign:
Each home should have clear and identifiable addresses. During our inspection we will identify residences which require address markers and will make these available to you at no cost. Residential addresses not clearly marked may delay us responding to you in the event of an emergency.
"Help us Help You"
During the conduction of this Home Inspection Survey, data received from our survey form, will be added to our data base. Information and statistics collected will be an invaluable aid to our foundation and Fire Department.
